On the Systemic Discrimination of Gay and Transgender Youth in our Juvenile Criminal Justice System

New research about LGBT youth in the juvenile justice system presented by the Center for American Progress has found that gay and transgender youth experience “unfair criminalization … harsh school sanctions, labeling as sex offenders, detainment for minor offenses in addition to subjecting them to discriminatory and harmful treatment.”  This discrimination impacts youth who are already more likely to have experienced neglect, abuse and intolerance in their home environment.   Image

Approximately 300,000 gay and transgender youth are arrested and/or detained each year, of which more than 60 percent are black or Latino. Though gay and transgender youth represent just 5 percent to 7 percent of the nation’s overall youth population, they compose 13 percent to 15 percent of those currently in the juvenile justice system.

Check out the link to see descriptions and further details outlined in the findings, including potential solutions. This is our community and this is an issue we can’t afford to turn away from.  A long but worthy read, sadly.
